Although the U.S. and Haiti are separated by a flight of less than two hours, the economic distance between them could hardly be greater. The gap between these neighboring nations mirrors the growing gulf between the privileged and powerless worldwide and testifies to the brokenness and injustice of our world.

Consider the devastation wrought by the recent earthquake. Why was the death toll in Haiti more than 200,000, while a quake 500 times more powerful in Chile claimed less than a thousand lives? The answer: extreme poverty.

Densely packed cities, poorly constructed buildings, and insufficient resources to support rescue efforts all exponentially increased Haiti’s vulnerability. Hundreds of thousands of innocent lives were lost because Haiti is a poor country. And when the earth’s plates moved, the growing gulf finally made headline news.

It is across this great chasm that Beyond Borders works, building understanding and solidarity between the wealthy and the poor. Together we find new meaning for our lives and the strength to build a world where God's peace and justice reign.
